Apple Inc. is actively seeking collaborations to enhance its newly unveiled Apple Intelligence platform by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. A report from the Wall Street Journal, which draws on information from individuals familiar with the ongoing discussions, indicates that Apple has engaged in conversations with Meta Platforms Inc. regarding the potential use of Meta’s generative AI model.
Additionally, Apple has engaged in similar talks with smaller companies in the AI space, such as Anthropic and Perplexity AI. However, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, these discussions have not yet led to any concrete agreements.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) held earlier this month, Apple made a significant announcement about its collaboration with OpenAI. This partnership is set to integrate the ChatGPT AI into the next generation of Apple’s hardware products, including new models of iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers, which will be equipped with the latest operating system updates.
In his presentation, Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, mentioned the possibility of incorporating Google’s Gemini AI into Apple Intelligence as well. Federighi’s comments suggest that Apple is open to allowing users to select from a range of AI models to use with their devices, which explains the company’s interest in exploring various partnerships in the AI industry.
As of now, OpenAI stands as the only confirmed partner for Apple’s AI initiative. The integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, as well as other applications. Apple plans to roll out some of these advanced features later in the year, marking a significant step in the evolution of its AI offerings.
