Apple has confirmed the acquisition of HopStop.com, an online city transit guide launched in 2005. HopStop.com provides door-to-door subway and bus directions and maps for New York City and several other major metropolitan areas in the US and six other countries.
This report is according to AllThingsD.com, an online publication that specializes in technology and startup company news, analysis and coverage.
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said, confirming the acquisition with Cupertino’s standard boilerplate.
Chinedu Echeruo, a Nigerian, founded HopStop in 2005. He worked as an analyst at investment banks and hedge funds before starting HopStop. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS from Syracuse University. Echeruo stepped down as the CEO in 2009 to become the Chairman of the Board.
At last count, HopStop had two million monthly active users.
Chinedu is currently a partner, and head of the private equity group at Constant Capital Partners (CCP), a West Africa based investment bank. Prior to joining CCP, Mr. Echeruo founded and raised nearly USD $8 million for two U.S-based internet companies; HopStop.com and Tripology.com.
He was also named Black Enterprise Magazine’s Small Business Innovator of the Year and listed in the magazine’s Top 40 under 40.
