According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is engaged in discussions with Google regarding a potential collaboration to integrate Google’s advanced large language model (LLM) generative artificial intelligence (AI), known as Gemini, into an upcoming iOS update.
The negotiations between the two tech giants revolve around licensing iOS features that will leverage Google’s AI LLM and considerations on how it will be branded within the iOS ecosystem.
This prospective partnership represents a continuation of the relationship between Apple and Google, as evidenced by Google’s longstanding position as the default search engine for Apple’s Safari browser, a fact that was disclosed during an anti-monopoly trial in 2023.
In a bid to bolster its capabilities in the AI domain, Apple recently made headlines with the acquisition of startup DarwinAI. This move underscores Apple CEO Tim Cook’s earlier declaration of significant investment in generative AI (genAI).
Additionally, Apple has expressed interest in leveraging OpenAI products to enhance the functionality of iOS, indicating a multifaceted approach towards integrating AI technologies into its ecosystem.
Reportedly, Apple intends to utilise Gemini and ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, exclusively for genAI functionality, while retaining its proprietary AI models for iOS 18’s specific features and capabilities.
Further insights into these developments are expected to be shared during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) scheduled for June this year.
Gemini, introduced approximately a year ago in response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, was devised by Google to address the growing demand for sophisticated AI solutions, particularly in light of potential applications within its search engine infrastructure.
As reported by Reuters, major tech players such as Google and Microsoft are engaged in a race to integrate their AI models into various consumer devices, aiming to augment user experiences across different platforms.
Notably, Samsung embraced Gemini technology to implement genAI features in its S24 flagship series, showcasing capabilities like chat assistance, real-time translation during phone calls, and AI-powered photo editing tools.
However, Gemini faced criticism for generating historically inaccurate and offensive images, leading to a temporary suspension of the feature pending further review and improvements.
