Wearable devices in recent times has become trendy as more wristbands and smartwatches are continually flooding the gadget market. Fitbit, a company known for the production of wearables for tracking fitness were the first to dish out beautiful devices of such. Other companies like Xiaomi, Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Pebble and others soon started launching smart health watches. Surprisingly or not, Apple according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) finished at No. 2 position trailing Fitbit and moving ahead of Xiaomi. 3.6 million units of Apple’s only wearable device, the Apple Watch, were shipped in the second quarter of 2015, accounting for 19.9 percent of the global market.
Ramon Llamas, Research Manager for IDC’s waearable team made a statement in a press release. “Anytime Apple enters a new market, not only does it draw attention to itself, but to the market as a whole,” “Its participation benefits multiple players and platforms within the wearables ecosystem, and ultimately drives total volumes higher.
4.4 million units of Fitibit wearables, were shipped grabbing 24.3 percent share of the market. This also reflected 158.8 percent year-over-year growth from the 1.7 million units the company shipped in the second quarter of 2014.
Xiaomi finished the second quarter in third place with 3.1 million wearble units shipped, giving it 17.1 percent of the market. Garmin (0.7 million units, 3.9 percent of the market) and Samsung (0.6 million units, 3.3 percent of the market) rounded out the top five. Other wearble vendors combined to ship 5.7 million units during the quarter.
