TIME magazine has announced the German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the TIME person of the year. She is the fourth woman to individually win that honour since its inception in 1927.

According to the TIME editors, Angela Merkel was chosen for asking more of her country than most politicians would dare, for standing firm against tyranny as well as expedience and for providing steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply.
Born in 1954, Angel Merkel has been the German Chancellor since 2005.
