Amazon’s most recent leap into artificial intelligence (AI) and shopping will help you pick out clothes and accessories. Amazon said the StyleSnap AI system will help customers find the clothes they’re looking for when they can’t describe what it is they want.
“You are not a poet,” Amazon says. “You struggle to find the right words to explain the shape of a neckline, or the spacing of a polka dot pattern, and when you attempt your text-based search, the results are far from the trend you were after.”
To use StyleSnap, just open the Amazon app, click the camera icon in the upper right-hand corner, select the StyleSnap option, and then upload an image of the outfit.
StyleSnap then provides recommendations of similar outfits on Amazon to purchase, with users able to filter across brand, pricing and reviews. Amazon’s AI system can identify colors and edges, and then patterns like floral and denim. Using this information, its algorithm can then accurately pick a matching style. Amazon is even offering commissions to fashion influencers whose followers purchase an outfit using their picture on StyleSnap.
The company has just announced this at their re: MARS 2019, Wednesday that they will be giving consumers the ability to basically get everything their friend is wearing. The same way Shazam gave us all the ability to know what everybody is listening to without asking, now we can from our windows in our houses just snap a passerby and we will know how to get just that same look. Once that is done you can then order it from whom else but Amazon themselves. Competitors are already in this space like Syte, ASAP54 and many others but Amazon is going to give this segment the mainstream presence it previously lacked even with her limited catalog. This will excite many upcoming fashion enthusiasts in the Nigerian market, many of which have their own online stores on Instagram. Technology has once again happened.
The AI team at Amazon has gone through this trouble of gathering data for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is now capable of sorting out the information it is provided with on its own. The product fits just right for them. No doubt this idea has come up in times past; I even heard this as a prize winning pitch amongst some teenagers in 2017. They might have beaten these to production if they had learned how to code. AI and more specifically, Machine Learning is the new quiet innovation that will take the world from zero to one as venture capitalist and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel puts it. We would not be wrong to expect something for other senses with the way AI is revolutionizing things. It is possible and a whole lot more things are now possible in the world we see.
Amazon’s previous moves into AI-driven fashion includes the recommendation software Amazon launched with the Echo Look camera in June 2018, which turned Alexa into a fashion stylist.
The $200 Amazon Echo Look lets you take voice-activated full-body selfies and short video clips to catalog and keep track of what’s in your wardrobe.
Also announced was Amazon’s new Prime Air drone design, a hybrid model that borrows from both plane and helicopter designs.
