The Alma Clinics network, a South African enterprise of nurse-led primary healthcare facilities, has recently obtained a substantial investment of $2.8 million from IDF Capital through its Alitheia IDF Fund (AIF). This infusion of capital is set to propel the expansion efforts of Alma Clinics throughout the nation.
Alma Clinics was established in July 2020 by CEO Sibongile Manganyi Rath amidst the tumultuous period of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns. The inception of the company’s first clinic took place in Protea Glen, Soweto, an area with a historical backdrop of limited access to healthcare services.
In a relatively short span, Alma Clinics has experienced swift growth, now operating six clinics that cater to the medical needs of over 4,000 patients each month. With the new funding, Alma Clinics is poised to escalate its reach, aiming to establish a total of 35 clinics across South Africa. This expansion is anticipated to enhance the availability of primary healthcare services in regions that are currently underserved, thereby improving health outcomes for a broader segment of the population.
CEO Sibongile Manganyi Rath expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with IDF Capital, recognizing the investment as a validation of the team’s commitment and effort. The capital boost is expected to enable Alma Clinics to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare to an expanded patient base.
Polo Leteka, the CEO and founder of IDF Capital and co-managing partner of the Alitheia IDF Fund, is set to join the board of directors at Alma Clinics. Leteka’s expertise in leadership and investment will play a crucial role in steering the growth of Alma Clinics.
The investment in Alma Clinics highlights the increasing recognition of nurse-led healthcare models in South Africa as viable and essential. The success of Alma Clinics serves as an inspiring example, opening doors for greater accessibility to quality primary healthcare, especially in locales where conventional medical facilities are lacking.
