    Airtel and Starlink accelerate satellite internet rollout across Africa

    Airtel Africa’s strategic partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink is rapidly gaining momentum, marking a significant leap in the continent’s digital connectivity efforts. As of July 2025, Starlink has secured operating licenses in 9 out of the 14 countries within Airtel Africa’s footprint, with regulatory approvals pending in the remaining five. This progress follows the landmark agreement signed in May 2025, aimed at delivering high-speed satellite internet to underserved and remote communities—areas where traditional mobile networks often fall short.

    The collaboration leverages Starlink’s constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and Airtel’s extensive terrestrial infrastructure to create a hybrid network. This integrated approach is designed to bring reliable internet access to critical institutions such as schools, healthcare facilities, and small enterprises across rural and peri-urban regions. The swift licensing progress underscores the urgency and scale of the rollout, positioning Airtel as a frontrunner in solving Africa’s last-mile connectivity challenge—a key competitive edge in the region’s telecom landscape.

    However, South Africa presents a more complex regulatory environment. The country’s telecommunications laws mandate a minimum of 30% local ownership for foreign operators—a requirement SpaceX is attempting to navigate through proposed training initiatives and partnerships with local entities. While the South African government has shown some openness to regulatory adjustments, critics warn that such workarounds could undermine the country’s broader transformation and equity objectives. Additionally, scientists have voiced concerns about potential signal interference with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), one of the world’s largest radio telescope projects. They are calling for stringent licensing safeguards to protect sensitive research frequencies.

    Despite these hurdles, Airtel is experiencing a strong financial and operational quarter. As of June 30, 2025, the company’s customer base expanded to 169.4 million users. Revenue surged by 24.9% year-on-year (in constant currency), reaching $1.4 billion. The company’s mobile money platform is also seeing rapid growth, with transaction values climbing 35% to $162 billion and user numbers rising to 45.8 million. Data consumption has soared by over 47%, highlighting the growing demand for internet services, particularly in non-urban areas—making the timing of the Starlink rollout especially strategic.

    Internally, Airtel is also undergoing leadership and infrastructure enhancements. Following its Annual General Meeting in July, Chief Financial Officer Jaideep Paul stepped down, with Kamal Dua appointed as his successor. The board also welcomed Cynthia Gordon as an independent director, signaling a continued focus on governance and strategic oversight. On the infrastructure front, Airtel is investing in 2,300 new mobile sites and laying 2,700 kilometers of fiber optic cable, reinforcing its commitment to expanding network capacity and resilience.

    Together, these developments reflect Airtel’s broader ambition: to lead Africa’s digital transformation through scale, innovation, and inclusive connectivity.
