AfriLabs, the expansive network of technology innovation hubs across Africa, has achieved a significant breakthrough in its quest to drive innovation throughout the continent. The network has recently been inducted as a member of the International Telecommunication Union Development (ITU-D) Sector, marking a notable recognition of its efforts. This development was officially announced at the ITU Council’s 2024 session, which took place in June.
The ITU-D, a specialized agency of the United Nations, is tasked with the mission to facilitate international connectivity in communications networks. It aims to improve access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) and foster a more inclusive digital society.
The inclusion of AfriLabs in the ITU-D is a momentous step that is anticipated to bolster the digital transformation and sustainable development initiatives within Africa. Through this new partnership, AfriLabs will have the opportunity to engage on an international stage, contributing to the development of policies and strategies that promote innovation and entrepreneurship within the African context.
Anna Ekeledo, the Executive Director of AfriLabs, expressed enthusiasm about the new collaboration, stating, “We are excited to join the ITU as an ITU-D Sector Member. This partnership acknowledges the impact of our work in nurturing innovation and technological advancement in Africa, and we are eager to engage in collaboration on a global level.”
