After a hard fought election, the Democratic Party candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, emerged as the winners of the US Presidential elections and now the President-elect and Vice President elect.
As at the time of this report and even still counting, Joe Biden has 279 electoral votes while the incumbent Donald Trump has 214 electoral votes.
Kamala Harris will be the first female African American woman of Asian descent to become the Vice President.
African leaders started sending in congratulatory messages yesterday even though the counting hasn’t officially been completed.
The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa sent in his message on twitter yesterday evening, saying “we look forward to working with you and deepening our bonds of friendship and co-operation.”
The Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari sent his message on Twitter stating that “his election is a reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to chnage their government by peaceful means.”
The African Union Commission’s chair person Moussa Faki Mahamat also sent in his message saying “the AfricanCommission looks forward to a new, stronger USA-Africa relationship based on mutual respect and shared values of international cooperation.”
President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana also sent in his message saying that “It is my sincere hope that President-Elect Biden’s tenure of office will be marked by the delivery of unity, security, progress and prosperity to all Americans.”
“I am hopeful that over the course of his presidency, relations between Ghana and the United States of America will continue to grow from strength to strength, relations which have, over the years, been based on a shared agenda of freedom, development, progress and prosperity.”
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta sent his congratulatory message today. Here are some excerpts from the message.
“President Kenyatta termed the emphatic win in the hard fought polls as a demonstration of Americans confidence in the leadership credentials of the former Vice President.”
“Americans have spoken loudly and clearly through their votes by picking a highly experienced, colorfully decorated and long-serving leader to become their next Head of State.
“On behalf of the People and the Government of the Republic of Kenya, I congratulate President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris for their emphatic win and wish them all the best as they prepare to lead the United States of America into a future of prosperity,” the President said.
