The fourth industrial revolution which will gather digital, biological, and physical technologies in new and powerful combinations is upon us and the African continent is the least prepared as it is not ranked among the top countries harnessing technology information. This is according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Networked Readiness Index.
The index ranked 139 countries measuring how economies take advantage of the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies for increased competitiveness.
Singapore is in pole position followed by Finland, Sweden, Norway, United States, Netherlands, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, and Japan respectively.
But all hope is not lost for Africa as three countries from the continent are among the top movers. They are South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ethiopia.
This report shows that Africa has a long way to go in economic digitalization despite the success recorded in the last decade in internet penetration and mobile telephony.
