Last week, 15th of August to be precise, MEF, the Global Community for Mobile Content and Commerce revealed the finalists for the ninth annual Meffys Awards. With more entries than ever before in 13 categories, from over 35 countries across all five continents, the 2012 Meffys mark the breadth, scale, maturity and continued innovation of the mobile industry.
Amongst this year’s finalists are entrants in six new categories including Consumer Trust and Social Responsibility & Development Awards; reflecting MEF’s focus for 2012 in supporting growth markets and mobile privacy & security. Other new categories include Publisher on Mobile, Life Tools App, Discovery and Engagement and Social Entertainment App. The 2012 Meffys have attracted over 25 percent of its entrants from mobile start-ups reflecting the continued development of the mobile ecosystem and its often disruptive innovation.

Twinpine for Twinpine Mobile Advertising Network (Innovation Award for Growth Markets)
Twinpine is a mobile advertising network reaching millions of Africans on mobile devices via the mobile web. They help brands and publishers run and manage tailored mobile advertising campaigns, enabling them to connect with the right audience, increase conversion rates and, ultimately, make the most of mobile. Twinpine is led by Elo Umeh and is headquartered in Nigeria.
Led by Anne Shongwe – Founder and CEO and based in Kenya, Afroes develops cutting-edge interactive digital media solutions rooted in Africa’s rich heritage and designed to mould Africa’s young citizens. Moraba is a free mobile quiz adaptation of a hugely popular Southern African board game. The game adds a quiz element that forces users to answer questions about Gender Based Violence – and in doing so educates and empowers the user. It was built for UN Women as part of the UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls.
Nivi Mukherjee is the founder and CEO of eLimu (based in Kenya). As a social entrepreneur, technophile and community volunteer, she is passionate about empowering youth and engaging in community initiatives that foster development and fun. eLimu is an interactive device with an educational programme aimed at engaging children as a teaching aide with videos, diagrams and quizzes.
