ICT ministers in Africa have approved projects and programmes in communications and ICT of the African Union (AU) and frameworks for the harmonisation of policies and regulations in the continent presented by a special technical committee at the headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The first-of-its-kind meeting was organised by the Department of Infrastructure & Energy and the Directorate of Information & Communication of the AU Commission.

Brahima Sanou, director of ITU said that although tremendous progress has been made on communication and ICT in Africa, there are also challenges to overcome.

“The challenges require policy makers and ministers to go beyond the telecom/ICT sector and embrace the ICT ecosystem including all the new players and stakeholders,” said Brahima.

“Today, there are over seven billion mobile subscriptions worldwide; 3.2 billion people use the internet, of which two billion live in developing countries and Africans pay up to 30 or 40 times more for internet access than their peers in the developed countries.”
