As technology continues to advance, so too does the capabilities of creative software. Adobe, a leading provider of photo and video editing software, has long recognised the value of using machine intelligence to augment human creativity. For over a decade, the company has employed its Sensei AI system to power features such as Neural Filters in Photoshop and Acrobat’s Liquid Mode.

Now, it has unveiled the next generation of AI features, known as Firefly. This family of generative models promises to take the creative capabilities of Adobe’s software to the next level. Among Firefly’s many capabilities, the first to be released will allow users to generate both images and font effects.

“Generative AI is the next evolution of AI-driven creativity and productivity, transforming the conversation between creator and computer into something more natural, intuitive and powerful,” commented David Wadhwani, President of Adobe’s Digital Media Business, in a blog post.

“With Firefly, Adobe will bring generative AI-powered ‘creative ingredients’ directly into customers’ workflows, increasing productivity and creative confidence for all creators from high-end creative professionals to the long tail of the creator economy.”

According to Wadhwani, Firefly’s generative AI technology will enable creators to work in a more natural and intuitive way, enhancing the creative process and driving greater efficiency. By integrating AI directly into creative workflows, Adobe is helping to unlock new levels of productivity and creativity for its customers.

Gone are the days when would-be digital artists were limited by their lack of artistic talent or dexterity. Thanks to the latest innovation from Adobe, Firefly, users can now generate professional-quality illustrations using only the power of their words. This new technology is not limited to text-to-image conversion, as Firefly’s multimodal nature means that audio, video, illustrations and 3D models can all be generated through verbal commands.

According to Adobe, the first model of the Firefly family has been trained on “hundreds of millions” of images from Adobe’s Stock photo catalog, openly licensed content and public domain material. This ensures that the model is not only capable of generating high-quality illustrations but also protects against potential legal issues such as those encountered with StableDiffusion and Getty Images. Additionally, the use of this extensive image library means that photographers and artists who contribute to Adobe Stock will be compensated for the use of their works in training these AIs.

Why Firefly AI Tool is Not Meant to Replace Graphic Designers and Artists

Adobe’s latest offering, Firefly, is a powerful generative AI model that has the potential to revolutionise the creative industry. However, there are concerns that this tool will replace graphic designers and artists, rendering them obsolete.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Firefly is not meant to replace the role of graphic designers and artists, but rather to augment it. By leveraging the power of AI, Firefly can help designers and artists break through creative blocks and unlock new levels of creativity.

One of the key advantages of Firefly is that it provides users with a curated selection of generated pieces and prompts to inspire creativity. This can help designers and artists overcome creative roadblocks and explore new styles and techniques, leading to new and innovative designs.

Furthermore, Firefly’s highly-steerable process allows for collaboration between human and AI, with users having full control over the creative process. This means that graphic designers and artists can leverage Firefly’s AI capabilities to create designs that were previously impossible, while still maintaining their unique artistic vision.
