    STEAM Education in Nigeria

    1
By Tajudeen Adegbenro on December 18, 2021 Education

STEAM education is gaining popularity in the classroom. STEAM jobs are among the most rapidly growing. In an ever-changing world, learning in-demand and relevant skills prepares students to become innovators and make a positive effect on society. Students are registering for STEAM courses because they’ll be more equipped for the workforce in the future.

    What is STEAM education?

STEAM Education is a learning approach that incorporates Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics as entry points to inspire student inquiry, conversation, and critical thinking. STEAM is an educational discipline that tries to instill in youngsters a lifetime interest and appreciation of the arts and sciences at a young age.

Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Math are all creative fields of study, yet none of them use a single approach of inquiry and exploration. Teaching relevant, in-demand skills that will enable students to become innovators in an ever-changing environment is critical, not only for the kids’ future but also for the country’s future.

Students can gain knowledge about the materials they are learning through the use of art approaches in STEAM education. Additionally, kids can gain a better understanding of the contents they are studying and spend less time memorizing them.

The Difference between STEM and STEAM

STEM is a cornerstone of STEAM. STEAM education places an emphasis on the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through the mediums of art and design. Alternatively, STEAM instructors can assist students in connecting what they learn in these key areas (STEM) to art practices and design components. At the end of the day, students should feel free to wonder, critique, inquire, and innovate.

    Why STEAM Learning is Important?

In essence, STEAM education produces students that take calculated risks, participate in experiential learning, persist in problem solving, value teamwork, and work through the creative process. These are the twenty-first century’s inventors, educators, leaders, and learners. This interdisciplinary approach contributed to the development of products such as the iPhone, the first laptop computer, and is now transforming cooking in third-world countries, hence improving air quality.

Why STEAM learning is important in Nigeria?

Incorporating STEAM Learning into the Nigerian Education System will result in a new revolution. We live in the ‘Jet Age,’ where our bright children must channel their zeal and abilities – this is the only way we can produce innovators capable of solving global challenges. STEAM education contributes to the following:

    •  To assist students in developing the abilities necessary for future success. Regardless of the position or industry, it is vital that students enter college and/or the employment with a diverse range of abilities that enable them to adapt to an ever-changing and fast-paced environment.

    •  Consider yourself free to express new and unique ideas.

    •  Steam enables students to interact with real-world tangible material elements while learning about subjects in various fields. Every aspect of STEAM education is applicable to real life.

    •  A creative approach restores the element of fun in the classroom. By integrating art projects to introduce STEM concepts, a K-5 STEAM program engages students and improves their learning and test performance. Engaged students acquire more knowledge and retain more of it.

Nigeria’s Vice President (as at the time of this article), Dr. Yemi Osinbajo addressed a crowd at the University of Lagos on the prospects and benefits of STEAM education.

Companies/Clubs That Offer Steam Training In Nigeria

●Attainables Entertainment Limited (STEAM empowerment foundation and The STEAM club) has been providing STEAM education to children in various schools in Nigeria for over six years, with Olabisi Ozo-Onyali as the pioneer of STEAM in Nigeria.

    ● TechQuest. TechQuest is a non-profit supplier of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education for children ages 6 to 16. The goal is to supplement traditional academic learning with an in-depth introduction to STEM in a fun and collaborative setting; this will be accomplished by arming individuals, schools, and organizations with the necessary information, resources, and tools for STEM education.

    ● Africa STEM and Video Game Research – A Company that provides curriculum in technology, video game, and engineering, providing African K-12 students with STEM experience.

    ● STEMers- The company’s mission is to promote, support, and sustain young people’s interests and choices in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in Nigeria (STEM).

    ● EDUFUN TECHNIK- An educational organization specializing in developing educational solutions for children and adolescents that assist them in planning and learning through play, practice, hands-on, and learner/child centered methods of training, while immersing them in the world of technology and, more specifically, (STEM) education through the STEM LAB.

    Conclusion

The government need to find a way of integrating STEAM education in Nigeria, Science in the world over stimulates development, however Nigeria is among the developing countries with little or no investment in STEAM education. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) is a global concept which deals with critical thinking, collaboration and analysis. In this period where there is economic recession, there is a need to seek alternative sources to revive the economy, STEAM had been regarded as one of the viable options.

Successful implementation of STEM is dependent on various education and economic policies that a specific country adopts. This is a reason the key policies and investment are required to unlock Nigeria’s potential.
