A Recent Leak Suggests The New iPhone May Have An Always-on Display Like The Apple Watch

A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the 2021 iPhone could have a always-on display, just like the Apple Watch.

The “Always On” Display feature will keep the display of your phone on at all times unless you enable the right settings. This is because your phone displays items such as time, date, notification icons and some tools that you can easily access without showing the screen.

Gurman wrote in a power-up newsletter that the phone will get longer battery life, fewer screen slots, better video recording, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a faster A15 chip.

This is not the first leak that Apple is working on always-on screens for its upcoming iPhones. Max Weinbach hinted earlier this year that the phone maker may use the same types of low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels that its watches will use in future iPhones.

This is in line with previous reports from Bloomberg that “at least one” of the four new iPhones will have an LTPO screen. This technology dynamically adjusts the refresh rate of the watch face to extend battery life. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said earlier this year that the iPhone Pro launched this year will have an LTPO display and a 120Hz refresh rate.

What Apple is bringing is something mainstream in the Android world. Most Android phones with OLED panels support the Always-on display feature and are highly adaptable. On some phones, you can add setting toggles such as for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LED flashlight, and cellular data. However, the main function allows users to see the time, date and notifications received on the phone. It is currently unclear how Apple will configure this Always-on display feature.

In addition to the possibility of Always-on iPhone screens, Gurman also announced that Apple could announce a new MacBook Pro in the fall “from September to November at the latest.” He added that the computer will go into production in the third quarter.
