It appears like Google is creating an entire division to help blockchain developers with backend services. The company intends to make Google’s Cloud Platform the most popular choice for individuals who wish to run Web3 applications.
Amit Zavery, vice president of Google Cloud, told CNBC, “We’re not trying to be part of that cryptocurrency wave directly.” “We’re providing technologies for companies to use and take advantage of the distributed nature of Web3 in their current businesses and enterprises.”
In an email viewed by CNBC, Zavery stated that the Web3 market “already demonstrates tremendous potential, with many customers asking that we increase our support for Web3 and crypto-related technologies.”
This is not Google’s first attempt to enter this market. Earlier this year, the company announced the formation of a Digital Assets Team and stated that it would investigate ways to enable Google Cloud customers to send and receive cryptocurrency payments. In February, on an earnings call, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the Cloud division was considering support for blockchain projects.
According to Zavery, the new team will consist of employees who have worked on Web3 projects at Google or on their own time. He stated that it may develop a method that enables other companies to make it simple for users to receive blockchain data. Zavery stated that Google’s products will be compatible with other platforms such as Amazon Web Services.
This contains an element of incongruity. A primary objective of the Web3 movement is to decentralise the web and redistribute control away from large companies such as Google, Amazon, and Meta. Google wants to be the first choice for Web3 developers who need a place to host their apps and services.
Zavery, a former Oracle executive, joined Google’s cloud group in 2019, months after Google tapped Thomas Kurian, Oracle’s president of product development, to be the next head of its cloud platform.
James Tromans, a former Citigroup executive who arrived at Google in 2019, will lead the product and engineering group and report to Zavery. The team will bring together employees who have been peripherally involved in Web3 internally and on their own, Zavery said.
