The Nigerian government through the Federal Ministry of Information and Communications has revealed plans to connect 50 percent of the population to 3G broadband in 2015.
The ministry said it plans to achieve this through the first phase of the “Wireless Broadband Infrastructure Upgrade and Expansion” section of Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan 2013-2018.
IT News Africa reported the plan was submitted by the Presidential Committee on Broadband to President Goodluck Jonathan in the second quarter of 2013. According to the committee headed by the former Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Ernest Ndukwe, 3G services would be powered by ubiquitous broadband facilities.
Apart from ensuring that all new mobile sites are LTE-compatible, the ICT Ministry will also articulate measures for complete digital dividend spectrum migration and release more spectrum for LTE through the NCC.
