It is a common scene in Lagos to observe people driving or walking using their phones. Predictably, it is either they are attempting to read the latest news, respond to a chat on Facebook, BBM, and Whatapp or receiving a call. So many comical and tragic things has happened due to the fact that you are engrossed with your phone.
Unfortunately, nomophobia (addiction to your phone) will continue to rise as tech companies produce sleek and savvy phones at affordable prices. Notwithstanding, it is important to caution yourself when you are using your phone so that none of the following will happen to you.
a. Lose your wallet
Your wallet is like a life support machine. If removed, it automatically means something sinister may happen. Oftentimes, a wallet contains valuables like ATM cards, Voters card, National ID card, driver’s license and of course cash. With your phone taking all your attention, you make yourself vulnerable to pickpockets who are aplenty at Lagos bus stops and in other circumstances, it may drop-off without your knowledge. When you eventually realize what happened, it may be too late. Rather than brood over the loss, it is better you begin the process of recovering the content of your wallet.
b. Forget your bus stop
Many have been driven past their bus stops because they are distracted by their phones. Immediately they board the bus, they whip out their phone and start chatting. By the time they raise their head, the bus is way off their bus stop. They have no choice than to alight at the next stop.
c. Accidents
A handful of fatal accidents have been caused by road users who are driving and using their phones simultaneously. The consequence of this has been tragic. It is advisable to abdicate your phone and quit social media and other instant messaging services while driving. When you get to your destination, you can respond to your all messages and return your missed calls. It is simply playing safe.
d. Bump into strangers
There is a possibility that this has happened repeatedly to so many people. While walking on the road, you are staring at your phone instead of concentrating on where you are heading. Before you know it, you have bumped into a stranger or if you are not so lucky, you will find yourself in a ditch! To avoid this embarrassment, just get off your phone.
e. End your relationship
Many people are guilty of this. Their partner is discussing something important, but rather than listen, they keep staring at their phones. This has led to the abrupt end of some loving relationships. It is so terrible that even individuals who are on their first date are engrossed with their phone that they end up wasting their time without knowing each other. Perhaps, a no gadget day should be set aside!
