This Is What A 5 MB Hard Disk Drive Looked Like In 1956

IBM launched the world’s first ‘SUPER’ computer with a hard disk drive of just 5MB in September 1956.

It weighed over a ton ( about 907.184 kg) which required a foklift to be carried around. This computer was known as the IBM 305 RAMAC, short for “Random Access Method of Accounting and Control,”. This thing was bigger than a refrigerator.

People are now totally dependent on this kind of storage to do a lot and by today’s standard, 5 MB of storage won’t even get you anywhere.

The RAMAC was big and clunky but it worked, and lived its glory days quite well.
