The team behind the 2020 Game Developers Conference (GDC 2020) has postponed the event originally scheduled to hold this March (March 16 – March 20) because of the coronavirus.
GDC is the game industry’s premier professional event, championing game developers and the advancement of their craft. The event brings the game development community together to exchange ideas, solve problems, and shape the future of the industry across five days of education, inspiration, and networking. Attendees include programmers, artists, producers, game designers, audio professionals, and business leaders.
Though the event organisers did not expressly say in the announcement that the cancellation was due to the coronavirus, most of the event’s top corporate sponsors, including Microsoft, Epic, Amazon, Facebook and Sony, announced that they would not be sending employees to the event due to concerns surrounding coronavirus
According to the conveners in a blog post,
After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.
Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time .
We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.
