Twitter’s 140 character limit – To ditch or not to ditch

There are rumours that Twitter wants to ditch its 140 character limit. Recode reported that Twitter was building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit. It is reported that it is considering the extension of the limit to 10,000

Kurt Wagner, in the recode report, said that company was targeting a launch date toward the end of Q1.

Jack Dorsey hasn’t officially acknowledged the rumour but here is his tweet concerning the issue

The debate to increase the character limit has been in the works since as early as September. One wonders why Twitter would want to extend the 140 character limit and whether this would be enough to keep its current customers or attract new customers. Kurt, of Recode, remarks that expanding the limit is a sign that Twitter and Jack Dorsey are willing to make serious changes in hopes of luring new users.

Twitter’s 140-character limit is what made it so unique, and taking that away would essentially turn Twitter into more of a blogging space.

Twitter removed the 140 character limit from Direct Messages in August 2015
