Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), the regulatory body for telecoms activities in Zimbabwe, has issued floor prices for voice and data bundles in the country.
A floor price is the minimum effective tariff chargeable per minute for voice calls and per MB of data.
According to a report by a local newspaper, the Herald, the floor price will be 12 cents per minute for voice services and 2cents per MB for data. These tariffs are effective from the 9th of January 2017.
According to the regulator, “All relevant licensees offering promotions and bundled service packages must review their offerings in the market in line with the floor prices set and discontinue all current offerrings that are not in line with the floor prices by 9th of January 2017”.
POTRAZ recognised that 2016 witnessed a continuous decline in overall revenues as data prices were priced below 1c per MB and this led to POTRAZ suspending all promotions in July.
POTRAZ says that “the floor prices shall go a long way in addressing the apparent under-pricing of voice and data services that was characteristic of data bundles and promotions that were being offered by operators”.
These new tariffs will definitely affect NetOne OneFusion customers as their data tariffs are currently priced below 2c per MB. Econet and Telecel will be the gainers as their data tariffs are between 2-3c per MB depending on the service.
