Apple has announced that it will be introducing CarPlay in the next generation of select cars in 2014. The select cars are Ferrari, Honda, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and Hyundai. Volvo has already shown us what to expect in this post.
According to Apple, CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use the iPhone in a car. CarPlay takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on your car’s in-built system.
CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for driving scenarios. It also works with your car’s controls — knobs, buttons, or touchscreen. And the apps you want to use in the car have been reimagined, so you can use them while your eyes and hands stay where they belong.
“iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing, in a statement. “CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction.’
The Verge says “CarPlay will come as part of an iOS 7 update, and only iPhones with Lightning connectivity (iPhone 5, 5S, and 5C) are supported so far. Beyond Apple’s own iTunes Radio, CarPlay will also let you access a number of third-party music-streaming apps, including Spotify, Beats Radio, iHeartRadio, and Stitcher.”
We will have to wait till March 6 at the Geneva Motor Show for a public demonstration of the CarPlay.
