Facebook quietly rolled out Facebook Lite, a lightweight Android version of the full app, to eight countries last week, inclusive of Nigeria. The other seven countries are Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
At just 252 KB in size, the app has been built to work on low-end and dated Android devices. It uses less data and works in all network conditions. It is designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity.
According to TechCrunch, Even though Facebook retooled its Android app specifically for emerging markets last year, it is making sure that it offers a good experience to any user not matter their device or network connection. (Android is the platform of choice for most smartphone owners in emerging markets since devices can cost upwards of $30.)
Do you have an Android phone and are resident in any of the eight countries that Facebook has launched? If so, then you can check out the app here.
