Blackberry might be considering switching to Google’s mobile operating system on its upcoming device, well, according to various sources from Reuters. The move could be due to the fact that the company’s late-to-launch BlackBerry devices running OS 10 haven’t competed well against Android or Apple, mainly due to a lack of big name apps.
BlackBerry is said to use Android on an upcoming slider device that was briefly showed off on stage back in March at Mobile World Congress, which could be released later this year but the company provided little detail on it since then. It’s unclear if this is the same slider device Reuters’ sources said may run Android but at least this certainly adds credence to the report.
So far, there’s been no comment from both Google and Balckberry on this report.
The slider phone will combine a touch screen with a physical keyboard that users can use if they prefer but the company isn’t completely switching to Android, even though they’re still struggling with their smartphone sales but one things is for sure… the Canadian smartphone maker is still committed to its BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched,” in an email to Reuters.
