November 27 is Black Friday. And as is the tradition in most parts of the world including Nigeria, online stores go crazy with unbelievable deals and discounts.
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November). Since the early 2000s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales.
The name. Black Friday, originated in Philadelphia, USA, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.
In most parts of the world, it has become the biggest shopping day of the year.
On Black Friday in the United Kingdom last year, British consumers spent £810m on online purchases alone. That works out to a rate of £9,375 every second. It is estimated that this Black Friday sales (including in stores) could hit £1.39 billion and shopping over the entire weekend nearing £3.5 billion.
It is estimated that in 2014, $50.9 billion was spent during the 4-day Black Friday weekend in the United States of America, down 11% from the previous year.
Though we do not have the country statistics for Nigeria as it is still a new phenomenon on Nigeria, some online retail stores have stated some figures for 2014.
Jumia.com.ng says it reached an all-peak in sales within 24 hours and had over 1,500,000 online visitors. The sales represented a tenfold order increase compared to 2013s Black Friday.
The Chief Commercial Officer for Konga.com, “We received thousands of orders within the first few hours, they have been pouring in from virtually every state in Nigeria and interestingly from several other countries as well.
