Demo Africa has released the list of companies that have been invited to launch at the DEMO Africa 2013 event, the second DEMO Africa start-up conference, in October 24 and 25 in Nairobi, Kenya.
A total of 300 serious applications were processed in lead to this event. These were then short listed to 160 ventures before a selection of the final 40 was made. The ventures cover five categories including Mobile Technology, Social Media, Consumer Products, Cloud Services and Enterprise Technologies.
DEMO Africa is a premier platform for the best and brightest companies throughout the continent seeking to launch their products in front of a global audience. VC4Africa represents the largest community of entrepreneurs building innovative early stage companies. Together the two organizations managed the application process for this year’s event.
The 2013 DEMO Africa application process took 3 months and a month for adjudication. A total of 12 judges from Sub Saharan Africa participated in the judging process. The Judges included Dele Akinsade, Martin Butler, Rebecca Enonchong, Louis Fourie, Stephen Gugu, Ally Hussein, Muchiri Nyaggah, Kevin Schuster, Toby Shapshak, Moses Sitati, Anthony Stonefield, Hesham Wahby. Out of the 40, South Africa will launch 12 start-ups, Kenya will launch nine while Nigeria and Egypt will launch four and five start-ups respectively. Tanzania had two qualifying start-ups while Ghana, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Uganda and Morocco will each have one project launching at the DEMO Stage.

mPawa, Flowgear, Qabila, Sasa Africa, Maliyo Games emerged as 2012 DEMO Africa winners. Last year, DEMO Africa Alumni raised USD 8 million in terms of capital, partnership and business after pitching their projects to investors.
