Starlink, the satellite internet service provider, has notified its Nigerian customers of an impending increase in monthly subscription prices. This price adjustment will take effect on January 27, 2025. New subscribers will be required to pay the updated rates immediately, while existing customers will see the changes reflected in their forthcoming bills.
In an email communication to its users, Starlink elaborated on the reasons behind the price hike. The company stated, “To continue enhancing the Starlink network and provide reliable, high-quality service across Nigeria, we are adjusting our monthly subscription prices. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to improve your experience with Starlink.”
Under the revised pricing structure, the lowest subscription tier will see a substantial increase from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month. Furthermore, the fee for the mobile global roaming service will now be ₦717,000 monthly. This marks the second occasion on which Starlink has attempted to raise prices in Nigeria. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) previously rejected a proposed price increase in October, citing that Starlink had not obtained the necessary regulatory approval.
For several years, Nigerian telecom operators have been advocating for tariff increases. However, they have encountered significant challenges in securing approval from the NCC. The regulatory body is now expected to sanction a tariff increase in the first quarter of 2025. Starlink’s recent communication to its customers indicates that the company is preparing to align its pricing strategy with the anticipated regulatory changes.
