PwC becomes OpenAI’s First Resale Partner, Signing 100K employees to ChatGPT Enterprise

OpenAI has announced a significant milestone in its journey to integrate artificial intelligence into the corporate world. The AI research and deployment company has signed a major deal with PwC, one of the largest management consulting firms globally. This partnership is set to bring OpenAI’s ChatGPT to 100,000 PwC employees, making PwC OpenAI’s largest customer to date. Additionally, PwC will become the first partner authorized to resell ChatGPT’s enterprise offerings to other businesses, signaling a new phase of AI adoption in the professional services industry.

Transforming the Workplace with ChatGPT Enterprise

The enterprise tier of ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI in August 2023, is designed to offer enhanced features such as faster, unlimited interactions, and the flexibility to build customized models tailored to specific use cases. This tier also includes advanced analytics and additional tools, positioning it as a comprehensive solution for businesses looking to leverage generative AI.

Richard Hasslacher, OpenAI’s global head of alliances and partnerships, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “PwC becomes our largest customer, but they’re also our first partner who’s going to be reselling ChatGPT enterprise… It is penetration into industry verticals, but also providing an expansive set of services that customers desperately need to take advantage of in a brand-new solution category.”

Boosting PwC’s Capabilities and Market Reach

For PwC, the integration of ChatGPT represents a strategic move to enhance its service offerings and operational efficiency. Bret Greenstein, PwC’s partner and “generative AI leader,” emphasized that adopting ChatGPT will not threaten jobs but will allow the firm to expand its business without increasing headcount. This aligns with PwC’s broader digital transformation strategy, which focuses on leveraging advanced technologies to drive business outcomes.

Greenstein noted that PwC has been an early adopter of ChatGPT, and the transition to the enterprise tier was a natural progression as the firm ramped up its engagement with the technology. By integrating ChatGPT, PwC aims to streamline its processes and focus more on delivering transformative outcomes for clients rather than building and maintaining the underlying technology.

The Broader Impact on the Consulting Industry

The partnership between PwC and OpenAI underscores a broader trend in the consulting industry, where firms are increasingly adopting AI and other advanced technologies to stay competitive. Generative AI, in particular, offers significant potential for consulting firms to enhance their service delivery and unlock new business opportunities.

The demand for AI-driven solutions is expected to grow, as evidenced by ChatGPT’s rapid adoption among Fortune 500 companies. OpenAI disclosed that its enterprise tier already boasts around 600,000 users, with 93% of Fortune 500 companies represented in this user base. The addition of PwC’s 100,000 employees in the U.S., U.K., and the Middle East will significantly boost these numbers.

A New Era of AI-Driven Business Transformation

As the partnership between PwC and OpenAI unfolds, it is expected to set a precedent for other firms considering similar AI integrations. The collaboration aims to provide customers with the tools and expertise needed to navigate the complexities of AI adoption and drive meaningful business transformation.

OpenAI’s focus on building a partner ecosystem will also play a crucial role in its strategy to scale its enterprise offerings. Hasslacher indicated that while OpenAI will continue to engage directly with enterprises, the partner ecosystem, starting with PwC, will be instrumental in supporting the deployment and success of generative AI solutions.
