Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) said it plans to register more than 250,000 .ng domain names before the end of 2014. According to the president of the association, Mrs. Mary Uduma, as at December 2013, more than 50,000 .ng domain names had been registered through NiRA’s registrars.
“We are expecting that we will reach 250, 000 domain names by the end of the year. We have already drawn up programmes on how to create awareness on the .ng domain names,” Uduma told News Agency of Nigeria.
To reach the goal, she said the association has put several strategies in place, one of which is the ”Domain Name Fiesta”, which will hold later this month.
“The fiesta will entail going round the states and local government areas to ensure that Nigerians know about the .ng domain name,” she said.
Another strategy to be taken by NIRA is its collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
“The collaboration would ensure that anybody registering its company’s name with the CAC also take a domain name.
“NiRA is already fine tuning the process with the commission, to ensure that the exercise was hitch-free,” she said.
Furthermore, Uduma said that NIRA registrars would be giving out 100, 000 .ng domain names for free.
“One of the advantages of taking up the .ng domain name is that it would launch individuals and businesses into the internet. It will further create employment and help to build local content,” she said.
