According to a recent report on the subscriber statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria has over 113 million active subscribers. Also the number of connected lines is also over 151.7 million.
These new figures are contained in the latest industry data for the month of December 2012 released by the Commission.
Analysis of the NCC numbers revealed that mobile subscriptions on telecoms networks in Nigeria have continued to grow at a fast rate, with active subscriber base placed at 112.7 million as at December 2012.
Further analysis of the data showed that Nigeria recorded net impressive growth of over 23.7 million subscriptions on telecoms networks as total connected lines in the country increased from 128.0 million active telephone lines in January, 2012 to over 151.7 million at the end of December, 2012.
From the figures, it can be seen that the increase in subscriber base was contributed mostly by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operators such as MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat Nigeria.
According to the NCC data, while active mobile subscriptions on GSM networks increased from 91 million in January to 109 million at the end of December 2012; that of the CDMA operators declined from 4.4 million to 2.9 million during the year.
On the fixed lines, the figure which stood at 688,333 million has, by the end of August 2012, reduced to 418,166 lines.
