Nigeria Empowers Data Privacy; NDPC Licenses First National Certification Body

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has officially granted a license to the Institute of Information Management (IIM) to conduct examinations and certify data protection professionals within the country. This decision aims to cultivate a robust domestic talent pool of certified data protection officers, addressing the growing demand for expertise in this critical field.

By establishing a nationally recognised certification program, the NDPC seeks to reduce reliance on foreign certifications, which have historically been expensive and inaccessible to many Nigerian professionals. This initiative is projected to create over 500,000 new jobs in the data protection sector, bolstering local capacity and contributing to economic growth.

The NDPC’s move aligns with the increasing global emphasis on data privacy and protection. With a national certification program in place, data protection professionals will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate Nigeria’s specific regulatory landscape, ensuring compliance with data protection laws and safeguarding individuals’ privacy rights.

The NDPC envisions the Nigerian certification program as a potential model for other African nations, showcasing the country’s commitment to data protection and its leadership in the digital economy. This could pave the way for a pan-African initiative, harmonizing data protection standards across the continent and fostering cross-border collaboration.

This development aligns with the broader Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (NDP-SRAP 2023-2027), a comprehensive five-year plan to bolster data protection practices nationwide. The national certification program is a crucial component of this roadmap, contributing to the establishment of a thriving data protection ecosystem in Nigeria.

The Institute of Information Management (IIM) has affirmed its dedication to providing rigorous training and certification programs that meet international standards. With a growing demand for skilled data protection professionals, this initiative is poised to create a vibrant and sustainable data protection landscape in Nigeria.

Overall, the NDPC’s decision to license data protection professionals marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards a more secure and privacy-conscious digital future. By empowering local talent, strengthening regulatory compliance, and fostering regional cooperation, Nigeria is solidifying its position as a leader in data protection and digital innovation.
