MTN South Africa has launched the MTN Icon 5G, its first self-branded 5G smartphone, priced at R2,500. The device promises to bring the benefits of 5G technology—faster speeds, lower latency, and enhanced user experiences—within reach of more South Africans.
The Icon 5G boasts a 6.6-inch touchscreen, a 50MP rear camera, a powerful 5,000mAh battery, and 128GB of internal storage. The phone was built with a focus on consumers still using older 2G and 3G devices. A TechCentral report noted customers can choose between a prepaid model, bundled with a once-off 21GB data package, or a postpaid plan starting at R219 per month for 36 months, which includes 1GB of data and 50 voice minutes monthly.
This launch comes as MTN South Africa recently partnered with Huawei to successfully conclude Africa’s first 5.5G network trial. It further aligns with the Telco’s commitment to expanding 5G adoption. Thando Gabela, General Manager of Devices at MTN South Africa, emphasised that the Icon 5G offers an affordable entry point for users unable to access high-end devices. “This initiative is part of our broader strategy to ensure no one is left behind in the digital revolution,” Gabela stated.
Positioned as a budget-friendly alternative, the Icon 5G is competitively priced against similar devices, such as the Hisense H50S 5G and Nokia G42, which retail for R3,150 and R4,000, respectively. By undercutting rivals, MTN strengthens its position in a market eager for cost-effective connectivity solutions.
Beyond affordability, the Icon 5G signals a cultural shift in South Africa’s telecom industry—one where innovation meets inclusivity. MTN’s move underscores the importance of bridging the digital divide while ensuring future-ready solutions for a broader audience.
With the MTN Icon 5G, South Africa steps closer to a more connected future, proving that affordability and innovation can coexist in the race to advance digital infrastructure.
