On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially announced the appointment of Mcebisi Jonas, the former deputy minister of finance, as a special envoy to the United States. This role positions Jonas as the official representative of both the president and the government of the Republic of South Africa in the US.
In a statement released by Ramaphosa’s office, the president expressed confidence in Jonas’s capabilities, stating, “I hereby announce the appointment of Mr. Mcebisi Jonas as my special envoy to the United States of America.” This appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen diplomatic relations and enhance communication between South Africa and the US.
MTN Group, where Jonas serves as chairman, confirmed that his new responsibilities will not interfere with his existing role within the company. Nompilo Morafo, the group’s chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer, clarified in a text message, “This does not impact his role with MTN. He will continue to serve as our group chairman alongside his duties as special envoy to the US.” This assurance indicates that Jonas will be able to balance both positions effectively.
Jonas’s appointment comes in the wake of a diplomatic incident involving South Africa’s ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, who was expelled from Washington approximately a month prior. Rasool’s expulsion was linked to comments he made regarding US foreign policy, which were perceived as critical of President Donald Trump. In this context, Jonas’s role as special envoy may be particularly significant as he seeks to mend and strengthen ties between the two nations.
Overall, this appointment reflects South Africa’s ongoing efforts to engage with key international partners and navigate the complexities of global diplomacy.
