Motorola is rumoured to be making a rollable smartphone

In a report by Evan Blass (via 91mobiles), Motorola’s rollable phone would carry the codename “Felix”. And like all models, its design will be different from those of other companies.

The company has only produced Razr foldable mobile phones with a clamshell shape and a small footprint when closed. While Samsung and Huawei sell clamshell-style foldables, they also sell devices that unfold into large-screen tablets, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Mate Xs 2. This concept will also be applied to Motorola’s first rollable smartphone.

In contrast to the Oppo X 2021, which unfolds horizontally from a 6.7-inch phone into a 7.4-inch device, the Motorola Felix will unfold vertically into a taller phone. When rolled, approximately one-third of its screen will be wrapped around a spindle at the bottom. As a result, it should be an extremely small and lightweight gadget. Rolled, the phone should be easier to operate with one hand. When the user needs an extra screen area to view a movie or play a game, they can unroll the display to increase its size.

Rollable smartphones are not yet commercially accessible, however, there are a few foldable cellphones on the market. Motorola is one of the few phone manufacturers that sell foldable phones.

Prior to the closure of LG’s mobile business division, one of the products in development was the LG Rollable. Unfortunately, the phone was not released before the company shut down.

In November of 2020, the Oppo X 2021, a smartphone that could be rolled up, was demonstrated by the creative Chinese company Oppo. However, design and durability difficulties have delayed the phone’s commercial availability.

What Motorola may actually put on the market may be somewhat different from the one depicted above. According to reports, the phone is still in its “very early stages of development.” Since there is no working prototype yet, the software for the rollable phone is being tested on a customized version of the Motorola Edge 30 Pro (Motorola Edge+ 2022 in the United States).

The Motorola rollable phone is at least a year away from release, and it may be cancelled if the technology is not practical.
