Microsoft Unveils Affordable Copilot+ Surface Devices with AI Enhancements

About a year ago, Microsoft launched a groundbreaking new class of devices — Copilot+ PCs — the fastest and smartest Windows PCs to date, with the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro standing as Microsoft’s flagship models in this category. The tech giant has now unveiled two new additions to its Copilot+ PC family, introducing refreshed versions of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro — both engineered to deliver best-in-class performance, AI-powered capabilities, and next-generation design. With availability beginning May 20, 2025, these devices mark a strategic step forward in Microsoft’s mission to redefine the personal computing experience for both everyday users and business professionals.

Introducing the New Surface Copilot+ PCs

At the heart of these new Surface devices is the Snapdragon X Plus processor and an integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) delivering 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This AI-focused architecture ensures ultra-fast responsiveness, long battery life, and real-time AI experiences that operate locally on the device — eliminating latency and keeping your data secure.

“We’re excited to continue partnering with Microsoft to expand the Snapdragon Copilot+ PC ecosystem,” said Kedar Kondap, SVP & GM at Qualcomm Technologies. “With powerful AI capabilities and exceptional battery life, the new Surface devices are designed to help users stay focused and productive.”

Surface Laptop, 13-Inch: Thin, Fast, and Smart

Starting at $899, the new 13-inch Surface Laptop is Microsoft’s lightest and most compact yet — crafted for users who prioritize portability without sacrificing performance. Encased in premium anodized aluminum, it is available in three modern finishes: Ocean, Violet, and Platinum. It also pairs seamlessly with matching accessories like the Surface Arc Mouse.

This model is 50% faster than Surface Laptop 5 and outperforms the MacBook Air M3, while delivering up to 23 hours of video playback and 16 hours of active web browsing — the longest battery life of any Surface to date. A vivid Full HD touchscreen, ultra-thin bezels, and a new AI-enhanced camera with Auto HDR make it a strong choice for work, video calls, or entertainment.

Security and convenience come standard with features like Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in, a new Copilot key for quick access to AI tools, and a customizable precision touchpad with adaptive touch.

In line with Microsoft’s sustainability goals, the device includes 100% recycled cobalt in the battery and recycled rare earth metals in its magnets. It is also designed for easier repairs, promoting a circular product lifecycle.

Surface Pro, 12-Inch: The 2-in-1 Powerhouse Gets Smarter

For users who value versatility, the 12-inch Surface Pro starts at $799 and is Microsoft’s thinnest and lightest Copilot+ PC to date. It offers the flexibility of a tablet and the functionality of a laptop, thanks to its adjustable kickstand and detachable Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard — now enhanced with a matte palm rest, full-size backlit keys, and adaptive touchpad. The Surface Slim Pen magnetically attaches to the device for secure storage and wireless charging.

Despite its ultra-lightweight 1.5 lb. build, the Surface Pro delivers robust performance, long battery life, and AI tools that elevate creative and professional workflows. The device also features 82.9% recycled materials in the enclosure and 100% recycled cobalt in its battery, in alignment with Microsoft’s eco-conscious design principles.

Unlocking AI Power with Copilot+ PC Experiences

What truly sets these devices apart is their ability to run AI-powered tools locally, harnessing the NPU to deliver real-time, secure, and responsive experiences.

    Highlighted features include:

    • Recall (Preview): A new interface that lets users search their digital history intuitively — retrieving documents, images, or websites by describing them in natural language.
    • Enhanced Search: Smarter, context-aware search in File Explorer and Settings.
    • Click to Do: Identifies actionable text or images on-screen and offers immediate suggestions using AI.
    • Photos Relight (Upcoming): Professional-grade lighting tools coming to the Photos app.
    • New Settings Agent (Preview): Users can describe problems in plain language and receive actionable fixes — even executed automatically with permission.

Microsoft is also collaborating with developers to bring AI-enhanced applications to Copilot+ PCs. Examples include Moises Live by Music.AI, which enables real-time audio separation, and Gigapixel AI by Topaz Labs, which allows for image upscaling up to 16 times without loss in quality.

Apps like Capcut, Davinci Resolve, Liquidtext, and Camo are also optimizing performance for this new architecture, ensuring that creative professionals and power users can work faster and smarter.

Tailored for Business, Ready for the Future

Starting July 22, 2025, both devices will also be available in the Surface for Business line. These models include features like Windows 11 Pro, anti-reflective displays, and an NFC reader on the Surface Pro — ideal for mobile or hybrid teams needing secure, efficient, and durable work devices.

With support for Windows 10 ending on October 14, 2025, now is the perfect time to upgrade. The new Surface Copilot+ PCs offer not just a new device, but an entry point into the AI-powered future of computing.

Pre-orders are open via Microsoft.com and major retailers including Amazon and Best Buy.
