Lagos launches free WiFi on BRT buses

The Lagos State government has launched about 100 buses with wifi access and other modern features.

The buses which were launched in conjunction with LAGBUS Asset Management Limited also have security cameras that provide live feed to security agencies for commuters’ safety while the buses can also be tracked via alerts on mobile phones for passengers who want to track arrivals.

The buses which are called Metro Buses will ply Sango-Oshodi, Obalende- Ikorodu, and Island-Epe routes, which is expected to expand to about 47 more routes as more buses are launched.

Lagos State has been known to bring innovation in recent times. Previously, the conventional buses known as BRT were introduced to a device known as ‘Card Validator’ and a ‘Lagos Connect Card’ in the pursuit of a cashless bus-riding system. Passenger with a registered card can board any BRT with a card validator in it, tap the card to the validator and when alighting tap the card again to ensure he/she has been charged appropriately with a 20 naira discount for any destination. Even though there were complaints with the efficiency of the payment method, it is definitely a step forward in upgrading transport systems for developing countries.
