Congratulations to the users of HTC one m7 and m8 as Google has finally released the Android 5.0 Lollipop update code to manufacturing partners yesterday. HTC vice president of product management Mo Versi confirmed last night on Twitter that HTC has indeed received the final code from Google.
Part of the HTC Customer Advantage program promises that HTC customers in the United States who own the HTC One (M8), HTC One (E8), HTC One (M7), HTC One max, HTC One mini and HTC One Remix will receive guaranteed software updates within 90 days of HTC receiving the code from Google. (It also applies to the One (M8) for Windows, but obviously not in this case.) Since HTC has now confirmed that it’s in possession of the final code, that means you should expect to see a software patch through your wireless carrier between now and roughly February 4.
Android fragmentation is a serious issue for Android users, as the latest usage statistics reveal that just over 30% of Android devices are now using Android 4.4 KitKat despite the fact that it’s more than a year old. From this perspective, HTC’s pledge to get your devices upgraded within three months is a very welcome move.
Lollipop is most notable for the new Material Design UI that adds both style and functionality to the platform, although it also has cool battery-saving features and support for 64-bit architecture as well.
We expect that this rollout be extended to other countries after the U.S.
