Honda has resolved to sell only electric vehicles by 2040. The Japanese Automobile company has set this new goal that 40 per cent of its sales globally will comprise battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles by 2030, followed by 80 per cent in 2035, and 100 per cent of sales by 2040.

Honda is the latest car manufacturer that is committed to a high percentage of zero-emissions vehicles into their fleets and to achieve carbon neutrality. The company said it would “strive to realize carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities” by the year 2050.

Also, while speaking at a press conference, CEO, Toshihiro Mibe said that Honda was committed to assisting the Japanese government reach its climate goal of reducing carbon emissions by 46 per cent by 2030. “I believe it is the responsibility of an automaker to achieve our carbon-free goal on a ‘tank-to-wheel’ basis,” said Mibe.

The CEO also announced that Honda is investing about 5 trillion yen ($46.3 billion) in research and development projects, including electrification, over the next six years.

The company’s current electric lineup is limited. It recently stopped the production of Honda Clarity EV, though it will continue to sell hydrogen and plug-in hybrid versions of this vehicle. The Honda E electric city car began selling in Europe last summer. The company also intends to partner with General Motors on the release of two new electric vehicles, using the American company’s modular vehicle platform. According to Honda, two electric SUVs will be released in North America, but not until 2024.

Honda is looking to extend this electrification strategy to producing new motorcycles and scooters. The company will release three new electric models “in the area of personal use” by 2024, as well as an electric motorcycle.
