Today marks the 10th year anniversary of Facebook. Exactly 1o years, 4th of February 2004, Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook in his Harvard school dormitory. (See original interface above). The site was conceived as a way to connect students, and let them build an online identity for themselves.
To say it has affected the lives of people is an understatement. It has changed a lot of lives for better or for worse and has established itself as a global phenomenon. The social network had 1.23 billion monthly active users as of December 2013. According to Pew Research Center Surveys, Adult Facebook use is intensifying: 64% of Facebook users visit the site on a daily basis, up from 51% of users who were daily users in 2010. Among teens, the total number of users remains high, and they are not abandoning the site.
The revenue is also in the upward trend. In its latest financial report released on the 30th of January, revenue for the full year 2013 was $7.87 billion, an increase of 55% year-over-year and net income for the full year 2013 was $1.50 billion.
The company was slow to react to the important mobile market, however, last week it reported that more than half its ad revenue now comes from mobile devices.
“It was a great end to the year for Facebook,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO. “We’re looking forward to our next decade and to helping connect the rest of the world.”
