Ethiopian Airlines is taking a bold leap into the future of aviation by partnering with U.S.-based Archer Aviation to deploy a fleet of electric Midnight aircraft under Archer’s “Launch Edition” program. Valued at up to $30 million, the agreement marks a significant step toward building Africa’s first air taxi network and transforming regional mobility across the continent.
The collaboration will see the deployment of Archer’s Midnight aircraft—a cutting-edge electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) model—into Ethiopia’s airspace, with ambitions to build a robust air taxi network. Archer will provide the necessary operational support, including pilots, technicians, and engineers, as well as software infrastructure and booking systems to power the rollout.
Ethiopian Airlines, known for its extensive network spanning over 140 destinations across five continents, becomes the second global partner in Archer’s Launch Edition program, following Abu Dhabi Aviation. Launched in February 2025, the program is designed to support early commercialization by demonstrating the capabilities of eVTOL aircraft in real-world conditions and gaining public trust.
The initiative isn’t just about commuting. While the primary goal is to establish a fast, sustainable air taxi network that can slash typical 60–90-minute road journeys into 10–20-minute flights, the partnership will also explore other promising applications, such as eco-tourism. These vertical takeoff aircraft can reach remote and scenic destinations otherwise hard to access, offering new experiences for travelers and supporting Ethiopia’s tourism sector.
The deal was formalized during a signing ceremony in Addis Ababa, attended by leaders from both companies and officials from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), who will play a pivotal role in ensuring regulatory readiness for this innovation.
“We are committed to pioneering advanced air mobility solutions that enhance connectivity and drive sustainable aviation in Africa,” said Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. “Together with Archer, we aim to redefine regional travel and create new opportunities for efficient, eco-friendly transportation.”
Archer’s Midnight aircraft is designed to carry four passengers and a pilot, with rapid recharging capabilities allowing for frequent, short-haul flights. It promises quiet, low-emission travel that could complement existing transportation systems without the need for massive new infrastructure.
“This partnership with Ethiopian Airlines represents a transformative step in bringing sustainable and efficient air mobility to Ethiopia and the broader African market,” said Alastair Curtis, Archer’s General Manager for Africa. “This is just the beginning of a new era of aviation for Africa.”
The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa also welcomed the agreement. “U.S. aviation companies have time and again highlighted the best of American quality and innovation,” said Nathan Stickney, Commercial Attaché. “We’re excited for Archer’s impact in the region and the prosperity this could bring.”
As African cities grapple with traffic congestion and the need for sustainable solutions, the Archer-Ethiopian Airlines partnership could pave the way for cleaner, faster, and more connected urban transport systems—one vertical takeoff at a time.
