Showmax, under its parent company Multichoice, has appointed Emma Gichonge as its first General Manager for East Africa as part of expansion plans. Prior to this, Gichonge served as the Managing Director of Multichoice Malawi for two years and oversaw franchises in East, Central, and West Africa.
“Showmax is a bold business, and is in an exciting stage in its story, moving onto the globally scaled Peacock platform, increasing its loved local content slate and introducing affordable new plans,” said Ms Gichonge.
“With my passion for innovation and East Africa, I’m looking forward to building the business with the Kenyan Showmax team.”
Excited about Showmax’s prospects, including its migration to the global Peacock platform and new affordable plans, Gichonge brings her experience from leading roles at Safaricom, East Africa’s leading telecom company, and tech start-up Yutap.
At Safaricom, Gichonge worked for nearly eight years, holding various managerial roles including leading the migration of the Mpesa mobile money platform. At Yutap, she oversaw the implementation of mobile money solutions across Africa and Asia.
Last year, MultiChoice, NBCUniversal from Comcast, and Sky unveiled a joint streaming strategy for Africa. The plan includes a rebranding and a new content lineup, all to be provided via their streaming platform, Showmax.
