A digital health platform, Miiskin that helps people to routinely track changes in their skin has launched a Mole Sizing feature which allows users to measure lesions or moles through the app and a reference object like a coin.
During skin self-examinations, and when monitoring moles for possible melanoma signs, size and changes are the main factors to be evaluated. The Mole Sizing feature makes use of the latest computer vision, augmented reality technology, and machine learning to assist users’ measure the size of moles and compare the changes.
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, around 80% of melanomas appear as new moles or marks, while 20% appear from existing moles. People can quickly notice skin cancer signs on themselves early enough, therefore Skin self-examination is very important to aid early detection.
To identify the five signs of melanoma, doctors recommend the use of the ABCDE tool. Miiskins Mole Sizing feature helps to achieve this aim by identifying two of the five signs, Diameter (D) and Evolution (E). Any mole more than 6mm (¼ inch) in diameter meets the threshold for the warning sign “D”. The app can measure users’ identify when a mole meets the threshold. Also, users can capture images of the mole, its size and monitor changes to the shape, color, and diameter over time. Therefore, users can see if the moles evolve, which signifies the warning sign “E”. The feature does not diagnose skin cancer. Users with warning signs should consult a dermatologist for medical assessment and treatment.
Users can snap their mole next to a coin with their hone camera. The coin serves as a reference object which is recognized by augmented reality within the app. The user can then specify the reference they are making use of and the outer extremities of the mole which allows the app to deploy machine learning and computer vision technology to measure and record the size of the lesion. Reference coin options include U.K, U.S, and the EU currency.
Though Miiskin is already available on Android and iOS devices, the new Mole Sizing feature will first be rolled out for iOS and will be compatible with iOS11 and above.
Miiskin has been a leader in machine learning and computer vision regarding patient skin self-monitoring technology since it launched its app’s popular Automatic Skin Imaging tool for automatically and privately taking full-body skin images for use in skin self-examination. Automatic Skin Imaging is the most effective means of assisting people to identify new skin lesions, a vital aspect of skin self-examination which is sometimes overlooked and helps to make skin image comparison easier along with time. Without Miiskin, it is time-consuming to monitor the appearance of skin or mole changes and challenging to carry out an accurate examination.
