Court To Decide if Uber Is a Digital Platform or a Transport Company

Uber is appearing at the European Court of Justice in a case to determine if it is a digital platform or transport company.

This particular case started in Spain where a taxi operator service in Barcelona filed charges against Uber accusing it of running an illegal taxi service in the country. But, since the judge was unsure how to rule on the case, the judge escalated or referred it to the European Court of Justice.

Of course, we all know that Uber consider itself as only a ride-hailing app that connects drivers to passengers who are ferried from point A to point B.

However, if the European Court rules otherwise, it will have a severe repercussion on its business not only in Euro but also all over the world. It will be considered as a transport company and it will go through the bureaucracies of establishing a business. This is because taxi operators in different parts of the globe that have grievances against Uber will take it to court

In addition to this, taxi operators in different parts of the globe that have grievances against Uber will take their concerns to court using the decision of the EU Court of Justice as the reference.

The ruling will be made in roughly six months’ time, according to a spokesperson at the European Court of Justice.

We will keep you updated on the decision of the court.
