Bolt is taking a bold step to improve road safety in South Africa by launching a cutting-edge dash cam solution for its driver partners. The global mobility platform has partnered with U.S.-based tech firm Driver Technologies to transform drivers’ smartphones into dual-purpose dash cams, capturing both front-facing and in-cabin video during trips. This feature positions Bolt as the first ride-hailing platform in South Africa to offer such a smart, hardware-free safety solution.
Smartphones as Dash Cams? Yes, Really.
Using Driver Technologies’ app, Bolt drivers can now convert their existing phones into dual-purpose dash cams — no additional gadgets needed. The app records both the road ahead and the vehicle’s interior, with all footage securely backed up to the cloud. Importantly, the app functions in Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, allowing Bolt drivers to continue using the Bolt app while recording is visibly active in the background.
To sweeten the deal, Bolt is offering all driver partners one free month of the premium dash cam app. After that, drivers can subscribe at an exclusive 75% discount for just R54.99/month. This gives them unlimited video storage, playback, and sharing capabilities — critical features when it comes to resolving disputes or providing evidence after an incident.
Security Meets Affordability
Lerato Motsoeneng, Senior General Manager for Bolt South Africa, explained the motivation behind the partnership:
“Driver partners regularly tell us that a dash cam can provide them with additional security and peace of mind. However, buying a device that meets their requirements can be expensive. By providing discounted access to premium dash-cam functionality, we’re ensuring drivers have the tools they need to protect themselves and their passengers.”
Beyond just enhancing peace of mind, the dash cam feature could become a powerful ally for drivers when dealing with insurance claims, law enforcement investigations, or customer support queries. Driver Technologies is also providing robust IT support and cloud storage management to ensure smooth operation.
Building on a Broader Safety Strategy
The dash cam rollout is the latest in a series of safety-focused initiatives Bolt has introduced in South Africa. These include Rider Verification, Trusted Contacts, and pickup codes — all aimed at building trust between riders and drivers. The company’s in-app safety toolkit has quickly become one of the most comprehensive among ride-hailing apps in the region.
Marcus Newbury, Co-Founder and COO at Driver Technologies, highlighted the broader impact:
“We’re delighted to partner with Bolt to deliver a reliable and affordable dash cam solution. This partnership empowers drivers with tools that not only enhance their safety but also support them in real-world incidents.”
How to Get Started
Driver partners can find the app — Driver: Driving and Dash Cam App — on both iOS and Android. Once installed, it’s ready to go with Bolt’s interface and designed specifically to function without disrupting ride-hailing operations.
