Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, has introduced new features aimed at enhancing user experience while reinforcing its commitment to an open and user-controlled ecosystem. The latest update introduces improved video capabilities, inbox management tools, and a strategic shift towards sustainable monetization and AI integration. In January, the platform introduced a dedicated video tab to user profiles.
Expanding Video Content to 3 Minutes
One of the most notable changes is the expansion of video upload limits. Users can now post videos up to three minutes long, a significant increase from the previous one-minute cap. This change provides greater creative flexibility for content creators and is expected to attract more engagement within the platform. The update also benefits users of Flashes, a complementary Bluesky-based photo and video app, making it easier to share and consume multimedia content.
Enhancing Messaging and Reducing Spam
The update also addresses growing concerns about direct message (DM) management by introducing a “requests” section for messages from unknown users. This addition enables users to screen their inboxes more effectively and decline unwanted messages, helping to combat spam and unwanted interactions. Given the recent surge in spammy DMs, this feature is expected to improve user experience significantly.
Bluesky’s Decentralization Stance
The rollout of these features coincided with Bluesky CEO Jay Graber’s keynote at SXSW, where she emphasized the platform’s decentralized nature and resilience against corporate takeovers. Graber highlighted Bluesky’s structure, which allows users to “fork off” and create alternative applications while remaining within the same ecosystem. This approach ensures that users are not locked into decisions made by a single company, reinforcing Bluesky’s independence in contrast to traditional social media giants.
Exploring Monetization Strategies
Bluesky is also exploring various revenue models to maintain its independence. The company is considering subscription-based services and paid developer tools for users who build custom experiences on the platform. Additionally, it is evaluating the possibility of turning certain services, such as content moderation and personalized feeds, into a marketplace-driven model where transactions generate revenue.
Responsible AI Integration
Beyond monetization, Bluesky is actively working on integrating AI while prioritizing user control. The company is collaborating with partners to develop a user-consent framework that will govern how personal data is utilized in generative AI applications. This initiative aims to balance AI innovation with data privacy, ensuring users retain control over their information.
