Nigerian based company, AfriOne, has opened its first factory in Nigeria to provide affordable mobile phones for Nigerians.
According to Sahir Berry, CEO of AfriOne, at the inauguration ceremony located in Lagos, “the plant was a technological breakthrough and precedent for the company and for Nigeria.
He added that with the inauguration of the plant, the company serves as a pioneer in the manufacture and assembly of high-end communication technology in the African space.
The facility currently assembles smartphones from imported parts and packages the phones locally.
Lekan Akinjide, director of strategy and government coordination at the company, said that factory has an installed capacity of 120,000 smartphone units per month and another factory is planned for the near future.
The factory has a total installed capacity of 300,000 products (including educational tablets, smart watches) per month out of its 20,000 square feet facility which includes Research and Development (R&D) offices and testing laboratories.
The AfriOne assembly plant launched with android phones – the Champion and Gravity range of smartphones which will cost from 29,000 naira ($92) to 33,000 Naira, targeting middle-income buyers in a country of about 180 million people.
The facility currently employs about 500 young people. Parent company Contec Global invested $10 million in the project.
